At Watsonia North Primary School we have a strong focus on developing the school’s programs relating to inquiry learning. Inquiry Learning is an active thinking and learning process requiring students to formulate questions, plan and implement ways of finding information and using these experiences to build answers to their questions.
The inquiry process involves:
- Planned, directed and experiential activities that provide opportunities for students to pose questions and gather information.
- Activities that help students organise the new information and skills in a way that helps them to form concepts and generalisations about their world.
- Opportunities for students to demonstrate what they have learnt (knowledge and skills) through their application to new or different situations.
Dr Jeni Wilson (Educational Consultant and author of several books on the Inquiry Approach), has worked with school staff to develop and extend the inquiry approach at our school. Students have responded most favourably to the Inquiry learning process, demonstrating high level of engagement and outcomes.
